From Floor to Furnished: A Panhandle Veteran Finally Feels at Home

Every veteran deserves a life of comfort and stability. Our collective responsibility as citizens is to ensure that veterans who have sacrificed so much have the support and resources necessary to lead comfortable and fulfilling lives. Panhandle Warrior Partnership (PWP) does this by empowering the community to empower its veterans. Such was the case for James Bates, a Navy/Coast Guard veteran (' 65-'69), who reached out to PWP during a transition period of getting back on his feet.

James Bates was referred to PWP by a local church. James initially contacted PWP for financial assistance for a utility bill deposit for his new apartment. The veteran was homeless prior to this apartment and had little income to afford this upfront cost. PWP Program Lead Dan Hendrickson secured the deposit through a community partner.

The PWP team remained in touch with James, recognizing that a comfortable home entails more than shelter. A few weeks later, James reached out for support on acquiring any furniture. He told Case Coordinator Melissa Rust that he had moved into an unfurnished apartment and was sleeping on the floor. Melissa immediately combed PWP's network of partners to see if any resources were available to help James. Thankfully, another local partner secured a brand-new twin bed, pillow, bed protector, and entire bedding set for James (in his favorite color, blue). Additionally, recognizing James' educational pursuits in culinary arts, another partner secured a desk to support his studies.

James was incredibly thankful for the support PWP was able to provide to him. As James Bates settles into his new apartment with a sense of comfort and security, we are delighted to have profoundly impacted the life of another veteran in the Panhandle community. PWP will maintain a relationship with James to ensure he continues to thrive in his new home.
