Community Integration in Action: Leveraging Connections in the Panhandle

Jon*, a post-9/11 US Air Force veteran, was on a long run of bad luck. For more than four years, he was without a job and denied unemployment. With bills piling up, Jon entered a local CareerSource office where it was determined that, as a disabled veteran, he was qualified for a list of training programs and job placements to get his feet back on the ground. His career counselor also determined that Jon needed a lot more help than simply getting back into the workforce. Jon was a 70% disabled veteran and, through his four-year struggle with no income, had lost a leg due to a required amputation from medical conditions. The medical conditions could very well be service related, but they were never investigated.

The counselor went to management who immediately turned to Panhandle Warrior Partnership (PWP) for help. PWP’s proven model of holistic support was implemented and, after a short survey, the PWP case coordinator referred Jon to the professionals at the county’s Veteran Service Office (VSO). Through a warm hand-off and follow-up communications, the veteran was immediately assisted by the VSO office personnel and the paperwork was expedited. Within the next 90 days, it’s anticipated that Jon will receive a significant increase in his much-needed disability benefits—possibly up to 100%.

Through PWP’s approach and mission of creating tangible relationships with every veteran, spouse, and caregiver, Jon was able to find the answers that he had so desperately needed. Now an official member of Team PWP, Jon and his family know who to reach out to find fast, effective, and caring holistic services. PWP will be reaching out to Jon from time to time to check on him and make sure that that run of bad luck stays exactly where it should – in the past.
